I joined the club in January, 1996. Becoming a Rotarian has been one of the most stimulating and interesting moments of my adult life, and I'm delighted to be a member. It doesn't take long to realize that the realm of Rotary ranges from community through the world and that one's imagination is the only limit to the good that can be done within that realm. Well, actually, there are some limits…
I was enticed into Rotary in the mid-90's by the opportunity to be involved in our gazebo project, of course. It was a particular treat to shepherd that project from design through construction, landscaping and public dedication and to see it take its place as a popular and pleasant element in San Bruno's City Park. I like to think of my profession as fun, and it has especially gratifying to see so many Rotarians and non-Rotarians freely participate in its construction and to warmly accept it as an asset in our community.
Funny stories? Let's see. There's the one about a fellow Rotarian who showed up at our regular meeting site on Wednesday despite my earnest effort as club president to clearly announce that the meeting had been postponed to Friday to accommodate the District Governor's visit. Came close to chewing out the Holiday Inn folks for not setting up our banner, he did. Did he show up for the Friday meeting after all? He knew better.
This year my committee is the whole club. I started this millennium term determined to enjoy being club president, and so far, it's been terrific. Why, it's been so terrific that I plan to win the marble game sometime this year just to show my appreciation….
